Testing 10 earmuffs, we focused on comfort, amplified sound, and passive noise reduction. Our goal was to find the best earmuffs that fit comfortably, provide good sound quality, and block out ambient noise. We shopped around for the best deals, and wound up acquiring the best quality earmuffs for less than $100. Each earmuff was evaluated for overall features, ease of use, performance, noise attenuation capacity, and value. We also conducted an informal user survey, where we came up with a list of pros and cons for each earmuff.

Periods of prolonged noise, whether from construction, machinery, or gunfire, can be uncomfortable. We researched earmuffs that provide passive noise reduction, and that can be customized to individual preferences. Earmuffs are an affordable investment that provides protection from loud sounds.

MSA 10034487 Earmuff, Soprano, for Hats

MSA 10034487 Earmuff

by MSA

Manufacturer: Msa

These MSA Soprano earmuffs are comfortable, fit well and provide excellent noise attenuation. They're also light, which makes them easy to move around in and pack away. The earcups are spring-loaded, so they're easy to slip on and off, and the headband adjusts to fit most head sizes. The earmuffs feature a removable headband, which makes them easy to wash. The Soprano comes with a carry bag, but it's a bit small. Although they're comfortable to wear for hours at a time, the earcups are a bit large, which means they don't seal well against the sides of your head. The fit is a bit loose, and they don't block as much noise as some other earmuffs we tested. The Soprano earmuffs work well for wearing at concerts, in noisy restaurants, on planes and trains, and for shooting guns. They're also a good choice for motorcyclists. They block a lot of noise, they're comfortable, and they look good.

Spring design offers low-pressure and a high level of comfort

The SoundControl EX earmuffs from SoundControl were one of the best performing earmuffs we tested. They're comfortable and durable, and they provide good hearing protection, too, with NRR ratings of 25 dB and 34 dB respectively. The earcups feature three positions: flat, angled, and locked. The angled position adjusts to fit most adults, while the flat position is best for kids. The cups are adjustable too, so you can rotate them 180 degrees, which makes it easy to adjust the cups, even when wearing gloves. The earmuffs are light, and the grip is tight, making them easy to adjust. They fold up well, and they still manage to contain a fair amount of padding. The earmuffs also have a padded headband, which makes it easy to adjust the size of your headband. The earmuffs come with a carrying case, a cleaning cloth, and a warranty card. They're also covered by a one-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.

Spring arm design provides proper closure and low pressure

The SoundControl HPE Earmuffs from MSA are among the best noise-canceling headphones you can buy. They claim to block up to 27 decibels of low-frequency noise, which is impressive, and that's especially impressive given that they're only 2.9 ounces. They are comfortable to wear for 10 hours at a time, and they come with two sets of foam ear cushions, so you can adjust them to fit either ear. The cups adjust easily, even with gloves on, and the ear cushions are easy remove, so you can easily replace them if they become dirty. The headphones also feature 3.5mm jacks, so you can use them with other audio devices. The headband is also adjustable, so it fits most people's heads. The SoundControl HPE Earmuffs come with a three-year warranty, which is pretty good, though the price is a bit high for what you're getting.

Spring design offers low pressure and a high level of comfort

This is a great set of earmuffs, especially for the price. The ear cushions are soft and comfortable, and I really like the three wearing positions: one that's more upright, one that's more angled, and one where the earmuffs are pushed closer to the head. The ear cushions are easily removable, so you can easily replace them if they get dirty, and the grip on the side makes it easy to adjust the cups, even when wearing gloves. The earmuffs do a good job at blocking noise, but you'll still hear some sounds, like someone knocking on the door or at the window, but it's much better than other noise-canceling headphones we've tested. The earmuffs are fairly lightweight, so they're comfortable to wear for long periods of time. They also come with a nice carrying bag, which makes it easy to take them places.

These noise-canceling earmuffs are extremely comfortable to wear, even for extended periods of time. The headband is stretchy and fairly comfortable, and the ear cups are soft, and their soft leather padded cups fit comfortably over our ears without too much pressure. The ear cups also fold for easy storage, and the earmuffs feature a durable, hard-shell case for storing the ear cups. The microphone is sensitive and responsive, and the audio is rich.
