The DigitNow Video Capture Converter is a handy little device. It's small, portable, and easy to use. It comes with two cables—one for connecting your VHS player or camcorder to the unit, and one for connecting it to your computer. The DigitNow captured everything we threw at it, including VHS, DVD, and digital video. The converter's video quality is reasonably good, but it's no match for a dedicated converter like a Firewire or HDMI cable. The DigitNow's video quality is high enough to play back on a computer monitor, but it won't come close to the quality of a dedicated converter. The DigitNow also doesn't automatically install drivers, so you'll first need to make sure you have the appropriate drivers installed on your Mac or PC. The DigitNow is inexpensive, but not cheap. For the price, it's a solid video capture device that handles the basics well, but isn't as versatile as dedicated converters.

(We caught an awkward moment in our test video where the camera informed us that the recording was interrupted, but testers were able to capture audio from the VHS tape.) It worked well with both DVD and VHS, and it had no problem handling 1080i video. For Mac users, the converter comes with a free download of a plug-in driver. Windows users, meanwhile, will need to use the included driver, which installs automatically. The dongle is compact and easy to work with, and it's powered by USB, so there's no need for an external power supply.

RUBU USB 2.0 Audio Video Capture Card
High QualityCapture high quality video and audio through the popular USB2.0 interface, no external power required
The RUBU USB 2.0 Audio Video Capture Card is simple to use, and it provides very good video quality. It's better than most of our previous picks, but it's far from perfect. The default settings don't support audio capture, and while you can force it to work with audio by going into the device's settings, it's kludgy. The video quality is also a bit on the soft side. It's a trade-off: you get high video quality, but your video could look a bit soft. But while some digital-to-analog converters, such as the AVerMedia model we tested, are expensive, RUBU's is affordable, and it performs well. If you don't need the highest video quality possible, the RUBUB is worth considering.

The AudioGrabber USB is a simple, reliable device for capturing and converting audio from an LP record player or cassette tape to a digital format. In our tests, it captured LP records with good quality, and the audio was digitized with reasonable fidelity. In our experience, the AudioGrabber's sound quality was slightly less than our top-rated model, but it's plenty good for casual listening. The AudioGrabber's capture time will vary depending on the length of the LP or cassette tape, but in our tests, it recorded up to 2 hours of audio on a 78-minute record. The AudioGrabber USB comes with a professional audio capture/converting software (Audacity) and online updating. The AudioGrabber USB is easy to use, and it's fully plug-and-play, so you don't need any extra power supply. The only drawback is that the AudioGrabber USB's audio output is not line-level, so you'll need a stereo RCA-to-USB or RCA-to-USB adapter to use it with line-level devices such as a cassette deck.
