At MOOZ Themes, our lab evaluates the latest tech for sound, video quality, and usability. We test wireless microphones, also known as wireless sound systems, for sound quality, ease of use, and range.

Wireless microphones can be great for public speaking, school presentations, worship, and karaoke. They come in a variety of styles, including handheld microphones, lavalier microphones, and headset microphones. Handheld microphones are portable, and lavalier and headset microphones are clipped to clothing or worn on your head.

In the MOOZ Themes Labs, we evaluate wireless microphones for sound quality, ease of use, and range. We test them using our sound meter, which measures volume, frequency, and harmonic distortion. We also test how easy they are to set up and use, as well as how easy it is to connect them to other devices. For the best wireless microphones, we score ease of setup, sound quality, range, and ease of use. These wireless microphones are the best:

The Q7 microphone has supercardioid pickup patterns tailored for vocals, and it includes an ear clip for convenient use during performances. The receiver features one-touch automatic scan, which finds the best operating frequency. The SWC88XHQ7-D offers up to 300' of operating range (line-of-site), and it includes an infrared sync button to quickly pair the receiver and transmitter. The Samson Stage 200 is a solid, no-nonsense handheld wireless system that offers good performance at an affordable price. The Stage 200 has two frequency bands (region dependent) that can support up to four performers simultaneously, and it features dual-channel operation, so each performer can use their own handheld transmitter. The system's range is good, and we found the handheld transmitters to be comfortable to hold and operate. The Stage 200 includes four AA batteries, an AC adapter, and (2) Q6 dynamic microphones. The handheld transmitters have a multifunction button and a mute/solo button. The multifunction button can be used to mute the transmitter's output, change channels, or adjust the volume. The mute/solo button is used to mute the transmitter's output, and it can be used to select which channel the transmitter transmits on. The Stage 200's display is small and hard to read, and the user manual isn't very good, so it's not always easy to find the controls. The Stage 200's audio quality is decent, but the Q6 microphones —which are the least expensive models in Samson's Q6 series—are not the best sounding. The Stage 200's manual also states that it uses 40 dB of dynamic range, but that's misleading: The transmitter's actual dynamic range is 42 dB. Overall, the Samson Stage 200 is an easy-to-use, reliable wireless system for performers on a budget.

Samson Wireless Microphone System (SWS412HH-E)

Samson Wireless System Microphone (SWS412HH-E)

by Samson Technologies

200' operating range

Samson's SWS412HH-E is a 4-channel wireless microphone system with four operating frequencies per channel and 6 operating channels per system. The sound quality of the SWS412HH-E is good, with smooth frequency response, accurate audio reproduction, and a strong, clear signal. The system is also stable, with tight, responsive controls, and a tight, clear signal. However, the Shure GLXD4 system we tested was slightly better, with brighter sound and less interference. The SWS412HH-E's audio controls are similar to those of the Shure system, but the latter's audio controls are easier to use. The SWS412HH-E has a touch-sensitive channel mute button, so you can mute a channel without having to push a button on the receiver. The SWS412HH-E's controls also have four buttons, which allow you to control the volume, mute, and channel selection. The SWS412HH-E's controls are easy to use, but they're not as responsive as the GLXD4's. The SWS412HH-E's battery life was shorter than the GLXD4's. The Samson SWS412HH-E is loud enough to handle loud performances, but it's louder than most performers want. It would be ideal for small gigs and for singers and musicians who are performing in a venue that is quieter than they would like.
